RULES COMPARISON

Main

A lot of criterions can characterize each type of game.

The most obvious difference is the size of the board : Canadian checkers are played on a 12x12 board, International and Frisian on 10x10 board, other ones on 8x8 boards (but sometimes with double corner on right, other times on left).

Another important difference is in the king moves : in American checkers and Italian checkers, the king can only move on the squares which are near him. In the other games, he can «fly» on the 2 diagonals that cross on his square, he can capture on them, and he can continue on them after a capture.

Other differences are the laws of capture : in international 10x10, in Brazilian, in Canadian, in pool, in Russian and in Frisian, men can capture forward and backward, in the other games they can only capture forward. Priorities can be given for captures. In international rules (10x10, Brazilian, Canadian), in Spanish, in Frisian and in Italian, you must capture as much as pieces as possible. But in Italian, it is much more complicated, because other priorities exist, for the piece which captures, and for the captured pieces.

I tried to resume these rules in the following graphic :

This graphic does not resume all the rules (for example, it does not let appear differences between Pool and Russian checkers).

And Turkish game has a lot of differences with the other ones, that don't appear there.

So, if you want to have more precise rules, you can go in each page.
